Voice Mail Messages for the New Year

Just another of yer Uncle Joe's timely services!

1. A is for academics, B is for beer. One of those reasons is why we're not here, so leave a message.

2. Speak.

3. Hi there. Now, you say something.

4. Hi, I'm not at home right now, but my answering machine is, so you can talk to it instead. Wait for the beep.

5. Hello. I'm David's answering machine. What are you?

6. Hi! John's answering machine is broken. This is his refrigerator. Please speak very slowly, and I'll stick your message to myself with one of these magnets.

7. Hello, You are talking to a machine. I am capable of receiving messages. My owners do not need siding, windows, or a hot tub, and their carpets are clean. They give to charity through their office and do not need their pictures taken. If you're still with me, leave your name and number and they will get back to you.

8. This is not an answering machine. This is a telepathic thought-recording device. After the tone, think about your name, your reason for calling and a number where I can reach you, and I'll think about returning your call.

9. Hi. I am probably home. I'm avoiding someone I don't like. Leave me a message, and if I don't call back, it's you.

10. Hello. I'm sorry I can't answer the phone right now. Leave a message, and then wait by your phone until I call you back.

Really Free Macca

At some point during his recent "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard Tour," former Beatle Paul McCartney sat down to chat backstage for Amazon.com. Now that clip, as well as a clip of Macca performing "Please Please Me" on stage and another promoting his children's book, "High in the Clouds," are available for free on the retailer's web site. Something really free from Sir Paulie — that may be a first!

Zakk's Back

It never made sense in the first place. Why would Ozzy Osbourne ever sift through hundreds of audition recordings looking for a lead guitarist? Well, either the contract negotiations or the publicity stunt worked. The Ozz-man has officially called off his search for a new guitarist and will continue to work with longtime collaborator Zakk Wylde. The official statement says, "At the time we announced the search, Zakk Wylde's itinerary with Black Label Society was quite overwhelming. Fortunately, Zakk has [rearranged] his schedule to make sure that he would be available to write, record and tour with Ozzy in 2006 and beyond." Whew!

Where's Elty?

As you know, Elton John and longtime partner, David Furnish, married under new civil partnership laws in Britain just before Christmas. Following a couple of weeks of hanging out in Venice, Italy, the couple has now extended their honeymoon with a trip to South Africa and has — reportedly — invited friend/actress/model Elizabeth Hurley to join them. Wow! Can you imagine having her along on your honeymoon?!? Wow!

Jon To Play Jon

Jon Bon Jovi will play himself in the March 26th episode of NBC's "The West Wing." The storyline will feature Jon lending his support to Democratic presidential candidate Matt Santos, as portrayed by Jimmy Smits, as well as performing part of the song "Welcome to Wherever You Are" from Bon Jovi's "Have a Nice Day" album. And the whole time he's on the set, you just know the Craft Services crew will just be dying to touch his hair!

Martin Luther King Day

The third Monday of every January is a federal holiday, set aside to celebrate the birth, life and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It took 15 years to create the holiday, with Michigan Congressman John Conyers first introducing legislation for a commemorative holiday four days after King was assassinated in 1968. After the bill became stalled, petitions signed by six million people endorsing the holiday were submitted to Congress Congress passed the holiday legislation in 1983, which was then signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. King's actual birthday is January 15th, but the holiday was created a week later to overcome opposition to the law since the 15th was considered too close to Christmas and New Year's.

All city, county, state and federal offices are closed today. That includes public schools, most banking institutions and all post offices. There will be no mail delivery, but most public transportation and trash pickup will continue as normal.

Selling Stars' Cars

The current ultra-pricey Barrett-Jackson Auction taking place this week in Phoenix has some unique vehicles on the docket. Included in the offerings is a Cadillac CTS Sport designed by Sir Paul McCartney and built by General Motors to specific instructions by the former Beatle. Another hot sale item is Elvis Presley's 1965 Lincoln Mark V limousine (only 33,000 miles!). That package even includes a bill of sale signed by Elvis himself. Other auction items include Sammy Hagar's 1967 Shelby GT 500, a few of Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony's custom vehicles, and a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr two-door owned by Alice Cooper. A word of warning: this is a very pricey event. Last year's top item was a 1953 Buick Roadmaster owned by reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes which snuck out the door for just $1.62 million. Now that's Rock & Roll!

GRAMMY Hall Of Fame

The Jimi Hendrix Experience's "Axis: Bold as Love" album and Bob Dylan's "Bringing It All Back Home" album are among 25 recordings being added to the GRAMMY Hall of Fame this year. The honor will no doubt result in another Hendrix album reissue.

Preston's Ill

Singer/songwriter/keyboardist Billy Preston is recovering from a recent bout with a serious infection of the sac encasing his heart. The 59-year-old Preston is best known for his work with The Beatles during the later portion of their career. Billy had a kidney transplant in 2002, but the kidney failed and he has been on thrice-weekly dialysis treatments ever since.

Alito/Bruce

Supreme Court Justice nominee Samuel Alito was asked 700 questions during his senate confirmation hearings last week, including one about Bruce Springsteen. Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois asked Alito if he's a Springsteen fan. Alito replied that he is "to some degree." Durbin said: "I guess most people in New Jersey would be. They should be." To which Alito said: "There was a movement some time ago... we don't have an official state song and there was a movement to make 'Born to Run' our official state song. But it didn't quite make it." The whole point of the questioning was to bring up a Springsteen quote where he said his songs come from a familiarity with "the crushing hand of fate," and to find out whether Alito believes in the "the crushing hand of fate" too. Long winded, yes. But if the Senator had just asked the question, he never would have made the Music News!

Rockin' Sundance, pt.1

Drummer Stewart Copeland will debut his documentary "Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out" on Sunday January 22nd at the Sundance Film Festival. The film consists of Super 8 movies (much of it concert footage) that Stewart shot from the band's inception in the mid-Seventies through their finale in the early Eighties. Copeland says Andy Summers and Sting have seen the film and were "very keen on it." Wait a minute — all three of those guys agreed on something? Now that's truly amazing!

Rockin' Sundance, pt.2

Neil Young's newly retitled film, "Heart of Gold," will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday January 23rd. The documentary, which follows Young as he performs for two nights in Nashville, will hit the U.S. and Canada in limited release on February 10th and will open in most cities by the end of February.

Non-Juicy Jovi Bio

But will he really tell all? Jon Bon Jovi is shopping a tell-all autobiography to publishers for an asking price of $2 million. It should be an interesting story, but may not be too juicy. The son of a former Playboy bunny, Jon has been married to his wife Dorothea for nearly 17 years and has four children with her. The 43-year-old singer (who doesn't do drugs or party) and his band mates are part way through their "Have a Nice Day" world tour. Wonder if he'll be telling about the other band member's exploits?

Duets For Tony's 80th

Word is that Paul McCartney, U2's Bono, Elton John, Billy Joel and Sting have all agreed to sing with Tony Bennett on the new album celebrating his 80th birthday. Because the duets collection will feature songs that Bennett helped make famous, there could be some seriously goofy rock star crooning going on! Stay tuned.

Axl Sues

Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose has sued Beverly Hills Classic Cars, claiming it failed to deliver two luxury cars after receiving $20,000 in deposits and failed to give him any money after selling his Ferrari on consignment for $135,000. No wonder the new G N' R album isn't finished!

UncUpdate On This Day Graphic

On this day in 1979, the Doobie Brothers released the "What A Fool Believes" single.

On this day in 1982, Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off of a bat during a concert in Des Moines, then was hospitalized and given a series of rabies shots. After undergoing the painful shots, the rocker said he thought the bat was plastic. He actually said something earlier, but no one could understand him.

Intense orange flames.

Alice Putts Around

Looks like Alice Cooper is putting for charity again. He's among the stars hitting the links for the 2006 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic golf tournament, which raises money for the Eisenhower Medical Center and a variety of other charities in the Palm Springs area. Others on tap for the famous tournament that runs through this weekend include pop singers Justin Timberlake and Michael Bolton; actors Samuel L. Jackson, George Lopez and Matthew McConaughey; and athletes Yogi Berra, Roger Clemens and Marcus Allen. Wonder if any of those manly dudes will be wearing make-up like Alice's?

Wakeman On Road (But Not Here)

Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman will mount a brief solo tour of the States in March. The "Grand Piano Tour" will run from March 1st through a March 11th show in Milwaukee. Unfortunately, he and his piano aren't coming anywhere near the Southland.

Jovi Does Wal-Mart

Wow! With all the Bon Jovi news coming out recently, you'd think the New Jersey band was up to something! Actually, word is that the band will release a six-track CD of recent live performances exclusively through Wal-Mart on February 7th. "Live From the Have a Nice Day Tour" will feature songs recorded during the group's December shows in Boston. Hard to believe it won't be "officially" released through normal channels after the initial licensing deal expires, but who knows?

Cult Again

While a full-blown reunion appears to be unlikely, The Cult has added a couple of Southland dates to its upcoming mini-tour. The boys will now be playing at the San Diego House of Blues on March 4th, and they'll rock the Key Club at the Morongo Casino on March 5th. Why all the sudden road action from a band that went on hiatus in 2001? Just follow the money, my friend. Cult guitarist Billy Duffy and singer Ian Astbury recently signed a management deal with Tom Vitorino, who also represents Riders On The Storm — the band featuring Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors with Ian Astbury filling in for Jim Morrison. Yes, you can expect more Cult dates to be announced real soon — but will they open for Riders On The Storm?

Pickett Gone

Legendary Stax Records singer Wilson Pickett died of a heart attack in Virginia yesterday at the age of 64. One of the most prominent R&B artists of the Sixties, along with Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and James Brown, "Wicked Pickett" was one of those credited with establishing the Memphis soul sound. From "In the Midnight Hour" to "Mustang Sally" to "Funky Broadway" to "Land of 1000 Dances," Pickett's high-energy sound kept dance floors hopping for years. In the midnight hour, rest in peace Wilson.
