Rolling Stone Collectors Beware
Looks like my complete collection is about to become obsolete. Every issue of Rolling Stone magazine will be available on DVD this Fall. "Rolling Stone Cover-to-Cover: The First 40 Years" will allow searches for every photograph, article and review ever published in the mag. The DVD release coincides with Rolling Stone's 40th anniversary, which will also be celebrated in three 40th anniversary editions of the magazine.
A Spider-Musical
Spider-Man: The Broadway Musical may not be the official title, but Marvel Studios is assembling the elements for a Broadway musical starring the popular superhero. Police Going To Havana
The Police kick off their 30th anniversary reunion tour in Vancouver on May 28th, and now it looks like they'll end it in Cuba around Christmas. The group has "initiated discussions of a free concert in Havana as an expression of their gratitude to Cuban fans who have supported the Police throughout the years... While planning details are currently underway, it is the band's intention to put on a free show in Havana this December."
Tribute To Ahmet
The stars turned out in force Tuesday night in New York City to pay their respects to the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger set the tone by telling the Lincoln Center audience that while some people thought of Ertegun as a father figure, his impression of Ertegun was "more like the wicked uncle with the wicked chuckle." Eric Clapton was part of a band that played two early Atlantic Records hits and also backed R&B legend Solomon Burke for his performance. Crosby, Stills & Nash did The Beatles song "In My Life," then were joined by Neil Young for "Helplessly Hoping." Then Young and Stephen Stills did a version of their Buffalo Springfield classic "Mr. Soul." Phil Collins did a solo piano version of his hit "In The Air Tonight," then was joined by his Genesis bandmates for a run through "Follow You, Follow Me." Stevie Nicks and her band performed "Stand Back" and ripped through Led Zeppelin's "Rock And Roll." The rumored Zep reunion didn't happen, but John Paul Jones backed Ben E. King at the memorial, while Robert Plant and Jimmy Page sang along at an after-party in Central Park. Others taking part in the event were Free/Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers, Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones, R&B legend Sam Moore of Sam & Dave, Bette Midler and Yes drummer Alan White. The Lincoln Center event was filmed, but there's been no word on whether a commercial release is planned.
Quote For The Weekend
It was Dave Barry who said: "Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."
Google Your Bedroom
Talk about scary. Google has implemented a new feature that enables you to type a telephone number into the search bar, hit enter and be given the person's name and address. Then, by hitting the MapQuest button, you will get a map to the person's house. It's really a nationwide reverse telephone book. The bottom line — if a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious and alarming — just try it with your own phone number. This feature may not apply to you if you have an unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, but you may know someone who needs to know this. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, enter your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes about 48 hours. And feel free to warn everyone you know.

The Edge's Extra Large Sale
Saturday was a big day for music memorabilia and Icons of Music Auction, an event in support of the Music Rising charity organization founded by U2's The Edge to help replenish musical instruments to musicians victimized by Hurricane Katrina. The Julien's Auction at the Hard Rock Café in New York City saw a 1966 Red Fender Mustang guitar once owned by Jimi Hendrix fetch $400,000, and a pair of round, blue-tinted sunglasses that once belonged to John Lennon go for $30,000. The Edge's longtime Gibson Les Paul guitar went for $240,000. Bono's sunglasses snagged a $20,000 bid, his Irish Falcon Gretsch Guitar for $180,000, bassist Adam Clayton's Fender Active Jazz Deluxe for $22,000, and a Larry Mullen Jr. tom-tom for $19,000. A variety of other classic rock-related items were also up for bid, including memorabilia from Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, KISS, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, James Brown and Ray Charles. In all, more than $2.4 million was generated from the event. Right so!
Elty's Fund Reaches Out
Sir Elton John is using his organization to help fight HIV and AIDS in India via an indirect route. The Elton John AIDS Foundation has teamed up with CARE International to feed people of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, where the rate of HIV infection has grown to an epidemic level. Because some of the medications that help people living with the virus are only effective when taken on a full stomach, "drug treatments must be run alongside programs which ensure those affected have access to reliable food supplies." A variety of AIDS groups and children's charities are involved, and John says that he's proud his foundation is contributing to the effort. And so are we!
G&R No Mas
OK, everybody act surprised now! Guns N' Roses have canceled their two scheduled appearances at South Africa's My Coke Fest. In addition, a tour of Australia and New Zealand that was due to start on June 10 in Perth, Australia, has been postponed indefinitely. Bassist Tommy Stinson's sprained wrist is providing another in a long series of excuses for missed gigs and recording deadlines. You may now return to your regularly scheduled life.
Randy Wins!
Last Sunday: In his third NHRA Division 7 race of the year, former Super Gas Champion Randy Balough drove his Uncle Joe's Racing Super Gas Corvette through eight brutal rounds of competition to beat Brad Pierce of Riverside by 2/100 of a second! And winning the Super Gas crown at The Strip At Las Vegas Motor Speedway has put Randy back into the points lead where he spent most of 2004! Congrats to Randy and Travis on a great victory! Next, the Balough express will rock the Auto Club Dragway at the California Speedway May 4th through 6th!

Dead Eye Miss America Shoots
No word if former Miss America Venus Ramey was wearing her sash as she used her .38 caliber snub nose pistol to shoot out the tire of an SUV belonging to a man who was trespassing on her property to steal scrap metal. The scrap he was allegedly trying to steal was actually a collection of machines, some pieces dating back to the 19th century, that she inherited years ago. When officers arrived, the 82-year-old Miss America of 1944 cooperated with their request to drop her weapon, all the while balancing herself on her walker. Authorities arrested Curtis Parrish and charged him with trespassing on Ramey's three-quarter-acre property.

Lots & Lots Of Rush Coming
While the CD release of Rush's upcoming album "Snakes & Arrows" is set for May 1st, the much-anticipated DVD Album limited edition won't be available until June 5th. That limited edition is rumored to be a 25,000 copy run, and will include a special 26-page booklet. Not to be confused with the DualDisc format, that will be a fully interactive DVD with the album also mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, as well as a 43-minute "making of" video, cell-phone ringtones, wallpapers, text, and other digital extras that can only be accessed via computer. But wait — there's more! In addition to the CD and limited edition offered elsewhere, Wal-Mart is offering a special CD version of "Snakes & Arrows" which will come with an "exclusive video download." This package will include a video clip from the upcoming VH1 special on Rush, obtainable via a special code that is included either in the Wal-Mart packaging or embedded in the CD itself. Let's just hope there's only one concert program!
Keith Loses His Mum
Keith Richards' 91-year-old mom, Doris Richards, passed away in Britain on Saturday. Representatives for The Rolling Stones said that Keith had been with her in her final days. Doris gave Keith his first guitar as a birthday present when he turned 15. Her father taught the boy some chords and encouraged his passion for music. Rest in peace.
Edge Buys Malibu
U2 guitarist The Edge has purchased a home in Malibu for almost $15 million. The 120-acre property is reportedly based in a canyon and includes both a cottage and a creek on the estate. Not sure who keeps track of these things, but word is that The Edge's newest pad is his third. He also has a home in Ireland and one in France.
PBS Honors Ahmet
The latest in the PBS American Masters program series is Atlantic Records: The House That Ahmet Built. The documentary follows the life and times of the label's co-founder, Ahmet Ertegun, and how he transformed the sound of popular music. Bette Midler narrates the two-hour film, which was shot over a period of four years and includes private clips of performances and studio sessions, as well as interviews of Ertegun and some of the biggest names in music including Aretha Franklin, Kid Rock and Ray Charles. Mick Jagger also has a cameo role. Ahmet passed away on December 14th after suffering a terminal injury following a fall at a private Rolling Stones show last October. Stay tuned for air dates.
Macca Reflects
The new special "Fortieth Anniversary" issue of Rolling Stone magazine includes Paul McCartney's reflections on The Beatles. Macca offers an abstract, metaphysically based explanation of the group and its popularity, describing the Fab Four as a molecular convergence that was "magic" and "alchemic." But he also credits the songwriting for the band's lasting influence. He says that over the years he's found that the songs have well-structured melodies and clever lyrics. But at the time he, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were just doing what came naturally, "just following our instincts." Paulie's next album, "Memory Almost Full," will be released on June 5th.

Heaven & Hell — featuring Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinnie Appice — will be rocking the Forum tonight!
Bono Does Idol Tonight
Bono will appear in tonight's "American Idol" fund-raiser special, "Idol Gives Back." Knowing he can reach 31 million viewers with his message was enough to spur the U2 singer to meet with the six remaining Idol finalists. He'll be discussing the work of ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History and how the audience can help. In addition, the Idol contestants will perform the song "American Prayer" that Bono co-wrote with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. Ellen DeGeneres will host the special two-hour results show with live performances from the Idol stage as well as the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. "Idol Gives Back" is intended to raise awareness and funds for Charity Projects Entertainment Fund and other organizations that provide relief programs to help children and young people in extreme poverty in America and Africa. Of course, CPEF is a supporter of the ONE campaign.
Mr. D. Is Coming To Town
Bob Dylan's traditional North American Summer tour will begin on June 22nd in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Among the dates he's scheduled through the end of July is a July 26th gig at the Pacific Amphitheatre during the Orange County Fair. Wonder if he'll be munching on the deep-fried avocados?
Mellencamp Playing Walter Reed
Like most of us, John Mellencamp doesn't like the war in Iraq, but he'll do almost anything to help those fighting in it. To that end, John will play a full concert this Friday for members of the military who are recovering at Walter Reed Hospital. John says that these types of shows aren't about politics, that his goal is to provide the troops with "a good evening for a change." This won't be his first military-related show. John performed earlier this year at the opening of the Intrepid Center, a new military rehab facility in Texas.
Elty Re-Ups With Andy
Elton John scored nominations in two categories for this year's edition of the prestigious U.K. songwriting honors, the Ivor Novello Awards. A little closer to home, he'll be performing at the third annual Andy Roddick Foundation Charity Gala on October 14th in Austin, Texas. Sir Elty also played at the inaugural benefit for the organization, which raises money for children in need.

Idol Makes A Difference
"American Idol" proved its clout as a U.S. cultural phenomenon last night by raising more than $60 million for young people in Africa and the United States. The two performance highlights in last night's two-hour program both took place at the Disney Concert Hall. The first was the surprise appearance of guitar god Jeff Beck backing singer Kelly Clarkson's moving performance. The second was Anne Lennox's amazing version of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." The prerecorded segment with Bono, U2's lead singer and leading spokesman for the ONE Campaign to Make Poverty History, wrapped up with him saying: "People say you can't be the generation that ends brutal, stupid poverty, but we can and we will... I have been in front of 70,000 people here in L.A. and its a pretty amazing feeling. I can't think of any feeling better except perhaps the feeling that you can save somebody's life and there is not one person watching this program tonight who cannot save a life." The six Idol contestants (a few of whom can actually sing quite well) closed the "Idol Gives Back" show performing "American Prayer," the song that Bono co-wrote with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics about the AIDS emergency in Africa.
All Hail The Edge
While Bono was in Los Angeles taping his part for the American Idol Gives Back special, U2 guitarist The Edge was honored for his charitable work at Monday night's Can-Do Awards dinner in New York. The gala's guest list included Bill Clinton, David Bowie, U2 bassist Adam Clayton, Patti Smith and members of R.E.M. On top of that, the event raised more than $1 million for the Food Bank for New York City, an organization that feeds 250,000 people a day. Right so!
More (Or Less) G&R Touring
Guns N' Roses have unveiled new dates for their 2007 world tour after canceling a series of gigs ostensibly because bassist Tommy Stinson sprained his wrist. The oft-delayed tour is now scheduled to kick off on June 2nd in Monterey, Mexico, and continue on to Australia, New Zealand and Japan. The current schedule runs through a July 21st concert in Osaka, with more shows expected to be added (and others cancelled) soon.

The heavy metal subject of the legendary 1984 "rockumentary" This Is Spinal Tap will join the bill for the Wembley Stadium Live Earth concert on July 7th. The Tap, who have reunited several times in the last 20 years, will share the London bill with folks like the Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The pseudo-group will also release a new single called "Warmer Than Hell."

Roddy's old buddy Elton John was one of the first to sign up for the concert at the newly refurbished Wembley Stadium in London. The Concert for Diana, which is being organized by her sons Princes William and Harry, is being held on what would have been Diana's 46th birthday.

The goal is a new studio album before year's end.
De Niro Says Bulls**t
What feud? David Bowie and Robert De Niro were photographed smiling together at the opening party for the renowned actor's Tribeca Film Festival. The sighting this past Tuesday in New York puts to rest speculation that De Niro was P.O.ed over Bowie's supposedly competing High Line Festival, which kicks off on May 9th in New York. "I told him that story was bulls**t," says De Niro. "The more festivals the better."

Rich Brit Musicians
It only makes sense that members of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin would be among the wealthiest musicians in England. The Annual Music Millionaires Rich List 2007 in yesterday's "Times of London" profiles the 1,000 wealthiest people and families in Britain as well as the richest 250 in Ireland. Collectively, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the family of the late George Harrison are worth nearly $2 billion. The Stones have a combined wealth of about $1 billion while Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are worth about $140 million in total. U2 were dubbed wealthiest Irish musicians with assets totaling $973 million. As for as individual wealth, the list compilers said McCartney dropped down to third this year because of an allowance for the possible cost of his divorce from wife Heather. Other musicians making the list include Madonna and Guy Ritchie (#6) with $548 million combined, Elton John (#7) with $448 million, Sir Mick Jagger (#8) $428 million, Sir Tom Jones & Keith Richards (tied at #10) $378 million. Pete's Method
The Who's Pete Townshend has finally launched his long-in-the-works Lifehouse Method electronic-music generator. The Method is an Internet-based computer program that allows an individual to generate unique pieces of music by submitting personal data to an interactive website. Townshend began developing the concept in conjunction with The Who's aborted early-Seventies "Lifehouse" project, and used the program to write the song "Fragments" for the band's 2006 "Endless Wire" album. The service will be available to users — initially for free — starting next Tuesday.
New/Old Stills
After years of rumors debating its very existence, Stephen Stills is finally going to release an album composed of demos recorded in April 1968. "Just Roll Tape" has just been scheduled for release next month. The collection came from a single session, during which the singer/songwriter recorded rough versions of songs that appear on the first Crosby, Stills & Nash album as well as Stephen's own solo debut. This should be interesting!
