Labor Day

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a yearly national tribute to the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5th, 1882 in New York City. Two years later, the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, and New York's Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. On June 28th, 1894 The U.S. Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a Federal legal holiday. The big back-to-school sales and end-of-year model close-out automobile sales evolved around the holiday weekend many, many years later.

Reserve Your Fake Zep Tickets Now!

If it's a slow news week in Britain, you can count on a silly "readers/listeners poll" or a another Led Zeppelin reunion rumor — and the latest of these Zep rumors may be causing fans to get ripped off. A U.K. ticket agency is taking cash reservations of reunion tickets, claiming the group is "on the brink" of announcing a show in London this Fall. Of course Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 following the death of drummer John Bonham, and over the past 27 years surviving band members have teamed up for a very few rare performances. This latest reunion speculation coincides with the release of the newest Zeppelin hits package, "Mothership," which will be out in November (and that's a sure thing!).

No Bowie/Dr. Who

Just forget about last week's report that David Bowie was going to portray an evil space alien in an upcoming two-part episode of the popular, long-running British TV show "Dr. Who." To Bowie, the real mystery is how the Brit newspapers came up with the story in the first place. He's not only denied his involvement in the project, he actually called it, "absolute tish and tosh" — a quaint English phrase that refers to "rubbish," "crap" and other words that contain the letters t, i, s, and h.

Alice In Chains Recording (Quietly)

Alice In Chains has been performing a series of acoustic shows lately, and word is that they recorded a set this past Friday at The Rave/Eagles Club in Milwaukee (one of yer Unc's old haunts). Besides A.I.C. songs like "No Excuses" and "Rooster," the boys also played covers of Elton John's "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" and The Who's "Squeeze Box." The as-yet-untitled acoustic live CD should be out early next year.

Jovi To Produce

Jon Bon Jovi has acted in a number of films, and now he's going to take on the real life role of "movie producer." The singer, together with his managers Jack Rovner and Ken Levitan, has bought an option on the upcoming children's novel "Almost Home" by Jesse Blank. Blank and her husband, Eric Jensen, will now work on a screenplay version of the book, which tells the story of a group of homeless teenagers living in Los Angeles. Wonder if they'll form a rockin' band?

September 4th Historicals

On this day in 1781, Spanish settlers founded Los Angeles. Too bad half of them got stuck in traffic and missed the ceremony.

On this day in 1888, George Eastman patented his new roll-film camera and copyrighted the "Kodak" servicemark. Although it's hard to picture so many years later, the developers actually lost George's first two rolls of film. (It would have been worse if they had been the rolls with pictures of his assistant's girlfriend.)

Hot Town – Summer in the City

The intense heat will be with us for a few more days, so here's a warning. Children, older people and those engaged in heavy physical labor are most vulnerable to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. It's a lousy way to die.

Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is a less severe form of heat-related illness that occurs when the body is too hot. Symptoms include excessive thirst, profuse sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, uncoordinated movement, fatigue and fainting. The skin usually feels cold and clammy to the touch. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, a more serious condition that can be fatal.

Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is the most serious form of heat-related illness. Symptoms include dizziness, confusion, combativeness, strong rapid pulse, dry skin or lack of sweating and possible delirium, unconsciousness or coma. Onset can be rapid, with progression to a life-threatening state within minutes. With heat stroke, the mechanisms for cooling the body simply shut down. The victims stop sweating, so their skin is dry; the blood vessels that are normally close to the skin constrict, not allowing blood flow to the skin, so there's less cooling. Their temperature rises to over 104 degrees, which can cause brain damage that interferes with breathing and circulation.

Thirsty?

If you are thirsty, you're already dehydrated. So, drink on!

Help! Finally!

A double-DVD edition of The Beatles' second film, 1965's "Help!," will be released on October 30th. The movie was released in DVD in 1997 and again in 2000, but has been off the market ever since due "to rights issues." The first disc of the new edition features a digitally restored version of the film plus a new 5.1 audio soundtrack. The second DVD offers a 30-minute documentary about the making of the movie, a missing scene, interviews with cast and crew, three theatrical trailers and vintage radio advertisements. But wait — there's more! "Help!" will also be available in a boxed set with a reproduction of director Richard Lester's original script and a 60-page book with rare photos and production notes!

Jovi's All Star Jam

Jon Bon Jovi and his wife, Dorothea, were just going to celebrate the end of Summer when they invited some friends over to their East Hampton spread. Of course their musician friends include Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett and Pink Floyd's Roger Waters. Some of the others included Zellweger, Naomi Watts, "Today" anchor Matt Lauer and "Saturday Night Live" producer Lorne Michaels. As you might expect, around 11pm, Bon Jovi jumped onstage with the party band. Before long, McCartney joined at the mic with Joel, Buffett and Waters spontaneously stepping up as well. Bruce had actually left prior to the start of the all-star jam (he's got that family thing happening), but the rest played until up 'round midnight. I'll let you know as soon as I find a setlist list!

Zep Gig Rumor Rumbles

Those wacky Brits have really got themselves in a lather over rumors that Led Zeppelin (or what's left of the band) may play a one-off show in November at the 02 arena in London. The tabloid press declares that the concert would, of course, be a charity gig organized by promoter Harvey Goldsmith (who put together Live Earth, etc.). So far, no denial from the boys, but...

Mellencamp Will R.O.C.K The N.F.L.

One of these is not like the others. John Mellencamp will take part in tonight's NBC's "NFL Opening Kickoff 2007" special — along with Faith Hill, Kelly Clarkson and Keyshia Cole. The big launch of the National Football League's new season will be staged in Indianapolis — home of Super Bowl 41 champions the Indianapolis Colts and a singer/songwriter named Mellencamp. The lavish event will lead into the season opener for the Colts, who will be hosting the New Orleans Saints. Amazingly, the 30-minute pre-game show will air on both NBC and the NFL Network. You may now return to your regularly scheduled life.

Daltrey On Mortality

Rock icon Roger Daltrey has responded to the recently published study about rock star mortality. In an article The Who frontman wrote for the U.K. tabloid "The Sun," he explains that the overindulgent lifestyle associated with rock music stemmed in part from the recklessness and naivety of youth. But he adds that in the Sixties and Seventies they didn't fully understand addictions or realize their consequences. Using his bandmate Keith Moon as an example, Roger said, "Most of us didn't really spot there was anything really wrong with Keith — we just thought he liked a drink." The drummer died in 1978 of an overdose of prescription drugs used to help reduce alcohol consumption. Daltrey speculates that Moon would have likely overcome his addiction with the proper help, but also recalls, "rehab then was very rare." Daltrey says he finds such young British stars as Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty — who are getting more attention these days for their drug and alcohol problems than for their music — "very sad." But he also acknowledges that for some artists substance abuse is part of the creative process. The U.K. study determined that famous rock and pop artists typically die younger than other people. Over the past 50 years, the average age of death for an American performer has been 42, while it was 35 for European stars.

Macca/OzzMan/DJ

Sir Paul McCartney and Ozzy Osbourne are the biggest of 10 Brit celebs chosen to be guest DJs on BBC Radio 1. The Radio 1 Legends series will begin to mark the station's 40th anniversary with the former Beatle hosting the first show on September 17th. Sir Paulie will play tracks from Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Rolling Stones and his old band. As Macca proudly proclaimed: "As I am a legend in my own street, they've very kindly asked me to do my own show, talk about people who inspired me and play my favorite records." Ozzy's guest turn will take place on September 27th.

Crosby, Nash & Browne Praying/Partying

Graham Nash, David Crosby and Jackson Browne are among the noted celebrities who will participate in the Pray for Peace event on October 16th at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The benefit, which Nash helped organize, will include an interfaith prayer service and an acoustic concert to celebrate the Dalai Lama being presented with the Congressional Gold Medal the next day. You gotta wonder if the Dalai Lama has considered the wisdom of partying with David Crosby the night before a Congressional appearance?

New Cult Coming

Mark your calendars — The Cult's new studio album, "Born Into This," will be released on October 2nd. This will be the oft-squabbling band's first new collection of songs since 2001's "Beyond Good And Evil," and a real loud tour is expected to follow.

Florida Band Into Georgia Music Hall Of Fame

Is this a stretch even for the great State of Georgia? Even though Lynyrd Skynyrd hails from Jacksonville, Florida, they're being inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. The Dixie-fried reasoning goes that since Skynyrd earned its first recording deal in a 1969 battle of the bands competition in Georgia, and producer Al Kooper signed the band outside an Atlanta bar four years later, they qualify to be inducted during the 29th Annual Georgia Music Hall Of Fame Awards in Atlanta on Saturday. Zep Rumors Keep Rumbling

There's a good chance that all the raging rumors about a Led Zeppelin reunion gig will be confirmed or denied in a couple of days. Word is that a press conference has been scheduled for Wednesday in London. That event (assuming it happens) should address/end speculation about a performance by surviving band members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. One thing for sure — they have a two-disc retrospective called "Mothership" which is due out on November 13th. A totally revamped CD/DVD package of their 1976 concert documentary "The Song Remains the Same" will be released a week later.

Gilmour's Secret Wish

At last week's London premiere of his new "Remember That Night – Live at The Royal Albert Hall" DVD, Pink Floyd singer/guitarist David Gilmour revealed his (not surprising) main musical inspiration. David said, "I really wish I had been in The Beatles. I was always a massive fan. The Beatles taught me how to play guitar, I learned everything. The bass parts, the lead, the rhythm, everything. They were fantastic." The closest he got was playing with Paul McCartney a few years back. As for David's new double-DVD, you can get "Remember That Night" on September 18th.

The Who Catch Up

The Who have finally launched an official website — http://thewho.com. The first notable thing the boys are making available is an online archive of never-before-seen material and a special double-CD set of rare early recordings by the group will be made available to fans who subscribe to a special online package that will be offered starting in November. The site will be the "official communication vehicle" for Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend.

Both pregnancies were kept secret from the press, and no other details of the newest addition to Morrison and Rocca's family have been revealed.
