These are the scripts Joe Benson used on the air at 95.5 KLOS in Los Angeles. They all received final editing by Jan Benson, without whom the task would have been far too daunting. Remember to give credit where credit is due, and enjoy!

UncUpdate On This Day Graphic

On this day in 1956, Elvis Presley released his first #1 single, "Heartbreak Hotel."

On this day in 1966, Stephen Stills and Neil Young formed Buffalo Springfield in a small house near the intersection of Fountain and Gower in Hollywood. A Buffalo Springfield earthmover parked nearby inspired the group's name (granted, they really liked the initials B.S.).

On this day in 1967, former Yardbird guitar god Jeff Beck debuted his Jeff Beck Group featuring bassist Ron Wood, drummer Aynsley Dunbar and a new singer by the name of Rod Stewart.

On this day in 1973, Stealer's Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You" entered the charts.

On this day in 1975, Led Zeppelin finally released the long-delayed "Physical Graffiti" album.

On this day in 1978, Van Halen began its first world tour at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Through much of the tour, the Pasadena band was the opening act for Black Sabbath and Journey.

Eagles Go Grand (Opening)

Who better to play when the musically themed Hard Rock Park opens in June than the Eagles? Well actually The Moody Blues will be there too. The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina theme park, which features all sorts of Rock & Roll themed rides and restaurants, will officially open on June 2nd. Fortunately for everyone involved, that's the very same day the Eagles will put on a welcoming show! The next day, on June 3rd, The Moody Blues will perform at the park to celebrate the unveiling of the ride they inspired, Nights in White Satin: The Trip. Now you're asking is there an Eagles themed ride? Not officially, but you know how those Myrtle Beach folks do love to party!

V.H. Reunion Might Not Be

A lot of sources are saying that the Van Halen reunion tour is falling apart. Word is that the Halen shows previously announced to run after the band's April 25th Sacramento gig have had their on-sale dates held back, with insiders saying Eddie Van Halen has "issues." Van Halen kicked off their "reunion" tour back in September with original members David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen and Eddie. But for nebulous unstated reasons, original bassist Michael Anthony was replaced with Eddie's 16-year-old son Wolfgang. No reason was given for the postponements of two recent concerts in Virginia and Georgia, but both have been rescheduled for mid-March. Stay tuned!

The New Leppard World Debut

It's true — last Friday evening yer Uncle Joe did the world premiere of "Nine Lives," the GREAT first song from Def Leppard's forthcoming album, "Songs From the Sparkle Lounge." And not only did Country superstar Tim McGraw co-write the tune with the band, he sang a portion of the opening verse of the rocker even before Leppard singer Joe Elliott came in. The album will be released on April 29th, the same day that Def Lep will perform it on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." No word on whether or not Tim will make a cameo appearance at that gig, but just stay tuned!

Neil's Going For It

Neil Young's doing everything he can to get his Linc Volt bio-hydro-electric hybrid car into the Automotive X Prize competition for 100-miles-per-gallon vehicles. So far, 50 international teams of maverick inventors have signed up to build and race the world's fastest eco cars — and to win $10 million in the process! The final part of the competition, in 2009 and 2010, will be a long-distance road race through 10 major U.S. cities from California to Washington, D.C. To be judged eligible, Neil's massive 1959 Lincoln Continental Mark IV must be "safe, affordable, have all the features a consumer expects from a car (ie. at least four seats, air conditioning and a stereo) and be backed by a business plan to produce 10,000 vehicles per year. Granted, that last condition might be a problem for the Neil-ster. Wonder if he ever considered converting a Studebaker Hawk?

Jeff Healy R.I.P.

Blind guitar wizard Jeff Healey lost his life-long battle with cancer yesterday in his hometown of Toronto. The 41-year-old had suffered from retino blastoma, a rare form of cancer, since birth. In fact, his blindness was due to the disease. Over the years Jeff performed and recorded songs with legends like B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn and George Harrison. His latest album, "Mess Of Blues," is due to be released on April 22nd.

What Women Really Want

Here are some interesting, if not debatable, statistics from a recent issue of "Glamour" magazine (and thanks to Jim Ladd for pointing them out!).
73% of women say a man's sense of humor is a turn-on
46% of women say the same about a man's intelligence
35% of women had feelings for a male friend but never fessed up
13% of women say they'd lie to a guy to impress him
One is the number of hours, on average, a woman takes to decide if a guy is worth a second date.

Zep Tour/Not Really

Possibilities of a Led Zeppelin reunion tour aren't looking too good. Britain's "Sunday Mirror" (never a bastion of truthfulness) reports that the band has turned down a promised $200 million each to play a North American and European tour. Word is that despite Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones' eagerness to take their reunion on the road, Robert Plant wants to leave last year's concert as their legacy. He feels that the band "proved they could still do it and that was enough." As usual, Robert's more interested in promoting his current work than in reviving the past. To that end, he embarks on a joint tour with Alison Krauss next month.

Halen Update #713

The Van Halen reunion tour has not been "officially" canceled, but six concerts, including last night's Dallas gig, have been postponed while Eddie Van Halen undergoes some sort of tests. The band's management says the guitarist "is undergoing a battery of comprehensive medical tests to determine a defined diagnosis and recommended medical procedures." The guitarist has battled cancer and substance abuse problems in recent years, however no other details have been provided at this time. Good luck Edward!

Angels Vs. Jagger (Once Again)

Good Lord, how many times have we heard this non-story over the past 39 years? A new BBC documentary is once again exploiting claims that angry Hells Angels planned to assassinate Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger at his house on Long Island. To refresh your memory, The Stones and Angels clashed at the ill-fated Altamont free concert on December 6, 1969 when the motorcycle club working security used extreme force on concert-goers and band members, ultimately stabbing an 18-year-old gun-wielding fan to death as chronicled in the film "Gimme Shelter." Why has this old horse of a non-story been resurrected again? Guess the Brits are short on rock star drama until the Macca/Mucca divorce comes down next week.

More Festivals Than Ever!

The Festival Frenzy of 2008 continues with the announcement that Radiohead, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Jack Johnson will headline San Francisco's inaugural Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival August 22nd through the 24th at Golden Gate Park. In the midst of the heaviest large-scale festival schedule in North American history, the Outside Lands Fest promoters hope to draw 60,000 concertgoers per day a short month before San Francisco's Treasure Island Music Festival. Just imagine what would happen if the Grateful Dead were still an operating entity!

R.E.M./Hollywood Bowl

Just checking! We all know The Police will be doing their final Southland show at the Hollywood Bowl on May 27th, but has anyone mentioned that R.E.M. will be there on May 29th? You may now return to your regularly scheduled life..

Asia Sets Release

It took a while, but they finally have a Stateside release date for their new album. Asia's "Phoenix," their first studio album to feature the prog-rock supergroup's original lineup since 1983, will be out on April 15th. The band will kick off their U.S. tour on April 4th in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

More Police For You

Just as you figured they would, The Police have added a second show at the Hollywood Bowl on May 28th.

Keith Richards: Fashion Model

You have to admit that Keith Richards isn't the first person who comes to mind when thinking of Louis Vuitton products. But that's exactly why Vuitton Communications chose The Rolling Stones guitarist for its latest ad campaign. Head Vuitton spokesperson Antoine Arnault told "Women's Wear Daily" the whole point was to feature "someone unexpected," adding, "I think when people are flipping through a magazine, this will stop them." Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz handled the photo shoot of Keef sitting on the edge of a bed next to a Louis Vuitton suitcase, holding a guitar while glaring off to the side. The caption reads "Some journeys cannot be put into words." When Richards saw the photo, he said it, "looks like a Rembrandt." Or, at least that's what they think he said.

Bono For Idol

Say what you want about American Idol, but last year the often lame amateur hour's prime time "Idol Gives Back" special raised over $76 million for various U.S. charities that help disadvantaged children. With that in mind, U2's Bono will once again be appearing on the charity event set to air on April 9th on Fox. Other entertainers taking part in the two-hour telethon include former Idol contestant Chris Daughtry, singer Annie Lennox and actor Brad Pitt. For better or for worse, both Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell will also be featured on the show — fortunately, they won't be singing.

Gene Does Rachael (Sort Of)

KISS bassist Gene Simmons will get as "domestic" as he can on today's episode of the "Rachael Ray Show." He described his experience with the pert little cook by saying, "All I can tell you about the show is that it involves a 'makeover' — but what kind I'm not saying." He also revealed that Rachael — a seasoned Food Network veteran — flies by the seat of her pants on her daytime TV show, and doesn't even use cue cards. To see if Gene uses cue cards, check out the premiere of the third season of "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" tonight on A&E.

Carmine's Drumming It Up

Drumming legend Carmine Appice will be getting some airtime on ESPN2 this year. His theatrical drum show SLAMM just filmed an action-packed promo video for NASCAR, and the clip will be shown before and during NASCAR races on ESPN2 throughout the 2008 racing season. SLAMM — described as "Stomp on steroids" — features Appice and four young drummers making music on all sorts of materials. In the NASCAR video, the five percussionists use hand grinders, air wrenches and tool boxes as instruments, which they pound against the hood of a multi-million dollar race car which will never make it through a tech inspection again.

Gilmour's Homeless Project Set Back

When Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour sold his London mansion for $7.2 million, he was putting into practice his 'house for a house' philosophy: the belief that the wealthy should sell one of their palaces to provide hundreds of homes for those who are less well-off. David's move was inspired by a project in New York where an Art Deco hotel had been turned into a block of 400 flats, one half for low-paid workers, the other half for homeless people. But after years of protests by locals and thoroughly British bureaucratic B.S., he and the Crisis charity have been forced to scrap the idea in favor of a yet-to-be-determined smaller proposal. David said: "Obviously this setback is a disappointment, but I am determined to make a success of the Urban Village project here in London and to continue to work with Crisis to bring real change to the lives of homeless people." It should be noted that New York is now opening its fourth such project, with eight other properties currently being developed.

Cleaning Up

Bet you didn't know there was an official Soap and Detergent Association! But without them, who else would conduct a 2008 Spring Cleaning Survey? Turns out that 77% of those polled say they regularly engage in spring cleaning, up from 65% last year. The poll also revealed that 86% of women claim to take part in the annual cleaning ritual, while 68% of men do the same. Among those spring cleaners surveyed, 84% clean behind the furniture, 80% wash windows and 76% clean floors and appliances. Only 29% of respondents said they would give "$100" to have someone do their spring cleaning for them, while 25% said they'd give up dining out for a month to do the same.

Shocking but true! KLOS' own (insert "legendary," "sort of god-like" or "historic" here) Jim Ladd is eloquently quoted in Michael Ventre's excellent MSNBC.com "Should Zeppelin Reunite?" article. A superb read and a great job all around!

Rutlemania (One Night Only)

Now Chris Carter, host of KLOS' "Breakfast With The Beatles," has another reason to break out his Fab Four clothes! On March 17th The RutlesEric Idle, Neil Innes, Ricky Fataar and John Halsey — will celebrate the 30th anniversary of "The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash" at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The event, presented by American Cinematheque's Mods & Rockers Film Festival, will feature a rare screening of the good natured mockumentary of The Beatles as well as clips from the 2003 sequel, Rutles-related footage from "Saturday Night Live" and the 1975 British TV skit that inspired the whole damn thing. As Rutlemaniacs know: the film was written and co-directed by Idle (of "Monty Python" fame and more recently known for the "Spamalot" musical); it premiered on NBC to horrible ratings on March 22, 1978; while Neil Innes wrote the tongue-in-cheek songs, he never performed live with the other three; and not only did former Beatle George Harrison appear on-camera in the film (as did Mick Jagger and Paul Simon), he actually was a backer of the project!

Going Under The Knife

Good thing Aerosmith wasn't planning on doing their regular Summer tour this year! Suddenly guitarist Joe Perry is about to undergo knee surgery. While he's canceling out of the next couple of months worth of appearances to give himself time to recover, he should be recording again real soon.

Miller/Cocker For You

Just for fun, Steve Miller and his band will be doing a three-night stand at San Francisco's famous Fillmore March 24th through the 26th. Then Steve will kick off the first two months of his Summer tour with Joe Cocker on May 24th. They'll be rocking the Nokia Theatre LA Live on August 6th and continuing on the road through August 17th. It's very likely that more dates (perhaps including another Southland show) will be added later in the Fall. Stay tuned!

Will The Dan Return?

If Steely Dan is going to play at the 2008 Montreal Jazz Festival on July 1st and 2nd, do you think they'll come to Southern California in August?

Great Live Rock & Roll (On Film)

R.I.P. Norman "Hurricane" Smith

Anger Management/Not

All that special training doesn't seem to be working for 27-year-old Justin John Boudin. Looks like the Minnesota bozo is going to get 120 days behind bars for hitting two people while on his way to anger management class. The alleged assaults took place at a bus stop where Boudin was heard yelling "Why don't you show me some respect?" at a woman before punching her in the face. Then he punched out an older man who tried to intervene. Police arrested the dysfunctional jerk after finding the folder containing his anger management homework at the bus stop. How long do you think it will be before he's recruited by an NHL team?

Brain Power/Management

In one day, the average adult speaks 48,000 words, exercises seven million brain cells, takes 23,000 breaths, laughs 15 times, and his/her heart beats 104,000 times. There is also an inverse proportion between the number of brain cells exercised and words spoken, i.e. more words/fewer brain cells used. And, of course, the closer one is to upper level management, the fewer times one's heart beats.

Hall Of Fame Tonight

Remember when — providing they were still alive and not involved in intra-band litigation — inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame actually performed at their induction ceremony? Those were the old days, my friends. Performers for tonight's 2008 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in New York will include (drum roll please) new inductees John Mellencamp and The Ventures — and that's pretty much it. With the recent passing of singer Mike Smith of The Dave Clark Five, it's understandable (and really cool) that Joan Jett will be performing for that British Invasion band. But what's with Madonna selecting Iggy & The Stooges to fill in for her? No matter the line-up, the big event will air live on VH1 Classic, while an edited VH1 special will premiere on March 22nd.

Nelson's Big Party

Can you imagine a party where U2, Paul McCartney and Queen show up to celebrate? Sounds like that will be the top of the bill for Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday on June 27th at London's Hyde Park! A huge concert is being scheduled to commemorate the milestone in the former South African President's life. Word is that Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, are set to host the event. Stay tuned!

Aerosmith Out Of HOG Party

Remember when guitarist Joe Perry suddenly needed knee surgery last week? Well the other shoe has figuratively dropped. Aerosmith have pulled out of headlining the Harley Owners Group's 25th anniversary concert in Milwaukee. The August 28th show is also slated to include performances by Kid Rock and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.

Recording Smashed Car Bits

Former Who/Faces drummer Kenney Jones and longtime Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford recently joined a bunch of other musicians to record a song called "Six O'Clock In The Morning" using instruments made out of parts from two dismantled automobiles. The unusual charity project was organized by "The Sunday Times of London" to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. After the recording was finished, Jones said, "It's a cracking number and dead catchy," while Rutherford quipped, "It's a great driving tune."

New Comp Of Old Classics

Clearing all the publishing and performance rights must have been a nightmare, but this might be a real interesting collection. The new "Now That's What I Call the '80s!" compilation includes hits by David Bowie, Heart, Billy Joel, The Police, the Steve Miller Band, Bob Seger and Whitesnake. VH1 Classic is currently airing a one-hour special/infomercial promoting the collection.

Knopfler Adds One Just For Us

Renowned guitarist Mark Knopfler has added a June 27th show at the Greek Theatre to the North American leg of his "Kill To Get Crimson" world tour. The GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist, best known as the leader of Dire Straits, has sold over 110 million albums, and was honored with the #27 slot on "Rolling Stone" magazine's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time. Dysfunction At The U.S. Junction

According to the new Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey of 26,000 people in 26 countries, just 53% of U.S. residents have regular, weekly sex. That ties America with Nigeria for the second to last spot on the list. Humping in at number one is Greece, where 87% of respondents claim to get regular sex at least once a week. Greece is followed at the top by Brazil, Russia and China. Last on the list is Japan, where just 34% said they have sex regularly. Considering that 60% of the worldwide respondents consider sex to be a "fun, enjoyable, and a vital part of life," it's no wonder that 40% of all Americans are grumpy!
