On this day in 1968, The Jeff Beck Group debuted in New York City. Their lead singer, Rod Stewart, was so nervous he hid behind the speakers for the first few songs. No, there wasn't a young blonde back there with him, but we all know how he likes doughnuts.

Stills Speaks

You have to agree that Stephen Stills revelation of his true inspiration that eventually resulted in his induction (along with his buddies David Crosby and Graham Nash) into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last week was right on the money. Stephen's simple assessment: "I have to thank all the great women who dumped me and all the dumb politicians that did things that (inspired me) to write songs."

Ozzy's Long Overdue

Two years after its original publication date, Ozzy Osbourne's "I Am Ozzy" memoir will be released in the United Kingdom on October 1st. You can be sure that the Metal Madman's wife/manager, Sharon Osbourne, will have him on a proper British promotional tour that will include in-store signing sessions. As for an American release, it will probably be closer to the Christmas shopping season.

Dave's Available (Sort Of)

A limited-edition, pre-release version of a DVD documentary focusing on Kinks guitarist Dave Davies' life, music and quest for spiritual enlightenment is now available for purchase. "Dave Davies Kronikles: Mystical Journey" will officially be issued Stateside in September or October. The program features a soundtrack composed by Davies, and as well as some bonus material. It will be most interesting to see of his big brother Ray has anything to say about it.

Spare No Expense

Word is that staging U2's upcoming 360° tour will cost the boys at least $150 million. The giant circular stage with a four legged spider-like structure above the stage holding lights, speakers and a gigantic video screen isn't coming cheap. None-the-less, with the U2 world tour launching on June 30th in Barcelona, the band's investment should be paid back by the end of the year.

5,000 Singing 34

On July 1st, 5,000 British school kids will be singing 34 Beatles songs at London's giant O2 Arena. They'll be a big part of The Long And Winding Road fundraiser for the Brit charities Art By Children and Global Angels. Let's just hope Paul McCartney shows up to help them out.

KISS Klose

Paul Stanley — the one person in the whole world who knows for sure — says that the new KISS album will be finished later this week. As you would expect, the singer/guitarist/producer has declared, "It is classic. It is all written within the band. And it rocks big time!" He also said that guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer will both handle lead vocal duties at various times on the album. Unconfirmed reports say that the band's first new studio album since 1998 will be released via an exclusive Wal-Mart deal. Stay tuned!

64 For Aung San Suu Kyi

Paul McCartney and U2 frontman Bono are among those submitting 64-word messages to an online campaign supporting imprisoned Burmese political leader — and Nobel Peace Prize honoree — Aung San Suu Kyi. The initiative coincides with Suu Kyi's 64th birthday last Friday. Macca said, "[She] is in an inspiration to her country and the rest of the world," while Bono's discourse featured reworked lyrics to U2's 2001 song "Walk On." Check it out at http://www.64forsuu.org/.

New Now Comp

Heads up! Journey's "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," The Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and Billy Idol's Rebel Yell" are among the hits featured on the second volume of the "NOW That's What I Call The '80s" album series which will arrive in stores on June 30th. Let's just hope it's the real Journey with Steve Perry, not some cover band dude, singing.

Sunflower '09

Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice and keyboardist Don Airey will be performing in London's Sunflower Jam 2009 on September 24th. This year's edition of the annual fundraiser — which was created by Paice's wife Jacky — will benefit the Society of Complimentary Medicine's Holistic Cancer Support and Research Fund. Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson and former Whitesnake guitarist Micky Moody will also be taking part.

UncUpdate On This Day Graphic

On this day in 1965, John Lennon released the follow-up to his first book, "In His Own Write." The book's title, "A Spaniard In The Works," was a play on the phrase "A Spanner In The Works." Because we Americans didn't know "spanner" was another name for a "wrench," the joke was completely lost on us. Oh well...

Bucks Up Buckaroo

As you would have guessed, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC and the Eagles did a lot of business in the past year. The Boss came in fourth behind Madonna, Celine Dion and Beyonce on "Forbes" magazine's list of Top-Earning Musicians. He earned his estimated $70 million the old fashioned way — through extensive touring and a new album. AC/DC just missed the Top 5 with their $60 million tour/LP income. The Eagles rolled in at #9 with $55 million, $5 million more than Bon Jovi pulled to rank #11. But which act are the biggest tippers?

New Heart

Heart's Nancy Wilson has confirmed that she and her sister/bandmate Ann have recorded basic tracks for three new songs for their upcoming album, and have eight more written and arranged that they "really like." We should expect the new disc to arrive before the end of the year. And when the Wilson's children's book based on Heart's 1978 album, "Dog & Butterfly" comes out later this year, it will include a CD with updated versions of the LP's title track and "Dreamboat Annie."

Styx Do The White House

Styx spent some time at the White House while in town for a concert earlier this week. Guitarist/singer Tommy Shaw, bassist Chuck Panazo, keyboardist/singer Lawrence Gowan and drummer Todd Sucherman got a private tour of the President's home and spent some time in the Briefing Room, fielding questions from the White House Press Corps. When asked if he was going to meet Obama, Gowan joked, "If I have time."

Pagey No Gamer

Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page isn't a fan of "Guitar Hero," saying it discredits the performers, and downplays the skills involved to make the music. As he pointed out, "You think of the drum part that John Bonham did on Led Zeppelin's first track on the first album, 'Good Times Bad Times,' how many drummers in the world can play that part, let alone on Christmas morning?" Pagey also got some support from The White Stripes' Jack White, who — along with U2's The Edge — is also featured in the "It Might Get Loud" guitar documentary. White called it "depressing" to hear that kids are "learning about music and experiencing music" through video games. "It Might Get Loud" will open in New York and Los Angeles on August 14th — and you must see it!.

On this day in 1994, Boston's fourth album, "Walk On," entered the charts a mere eight years after the band's "Third Stage."

On this day in 1994, Chet Helms, who founded and managed Big Brother & The Holding Company with Janis Joplin, died in San Francisco of complications from a stroke at age 62. It was Helms who staged the free concerts at Golden Gate Park that became the backdrop for 1967's Summer of Love. He also helped the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish and others develop the "San Francisco Sound."

Book 'Em Macca

It's evident that Paul McCartney isn't going to relax soon. Macca keeps adding to his schedule with new August shows set for Boston and Atlanta. August 5th and 6th he'll be rocking Boston's Fenway Park, and he'll play The Green Concert benefit for Atlanta's Piedmont Conservancy on August 15th. Sir Paulie will make his Summer concert debut in Halifax, Nova Scotia on July 11th, then play the first concerts at the New York Mets' new home on July 17th, 18th and 21st. August 1st will see him and his band hit FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. Can a Dodger Stadium gig be far behind?

Bucks Up Auction Action

A signed "Sgt. Pepper's" poster — featuring the autographs of all four Beatles — sold for a mere $52,500 at Christie's Auction House in New York City earlier this week. A book of handwritten lyrics penned by late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott went for $35,000, and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain's cheap Sears bass guitar sold for almost $44,000. Despite the tough economic times, it's obvious that people will still pay a high price for the right items.

Finally A Kinks Feature

Sounds like director Julien Temple is finally going to make a feature-length film about The Kinks. Kinks frontman Ray Davies has also confirmed that while he, his brother Dave and drummer Mick Avory have gotten back together to jam a bit, an official Kinks reunion will probably never happen. While Dave, who suffered a stroke in 2004, is improving, Ray says he is not ready: "With Dave, a lot of it is psychological. I'll guide him in, and coerce and nurture him, and when the time is right I suppose I'll even shout at him again... whatever he can play we'll create something around it together. We'll function just fine like that," adding that "I gotta tell you — I miss The Kinks." Temple, who also directed the 2007 documentary "Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten," had previously done music videos for The Kinks' "Come Dancing" and "Don't Forget To Dance."

V.H. G.H.

Instead of going head-to-head with the Beatles Rock Band release, word is that the Van Halen-themed edition of Guitar Hero will come out in November or December. Featuring 25 of the band's songs, the game also includes three of Eddie Van Halen's solos as well as songs from 19 other acts.

Doctors say he should be in recovery for at least 12 months. Previous to this he's had both knees and hips replaced.

It's A Process

Crosby, Stills & Nash's David Crosby has shed some poetic light on how the boys are selecting songs for their upcoming covers album. On their current tour, CSN have been performing a number of songs on stage, including Bob Dylan's "Lady of the North Country" and the Grateful Dead's "Uncle John's Band." David compares it to "...putting on a shoe. If it seems to fit, then you wear it." But so far, producer Rick Rubin has liked only "one out of eight" cover songs they've tried.

Journey's Drummer Down

Journey were forced to cancel Tuesday's Berlin concert after drummer Deen Castronovo was hospitalized for chest pains. Though no heart problems were detected, Deen was held for two days of testing. Edward Gets Hitched

Sorry girls — Eddie Van Halen finally married his girlfriend/publicist Janie Liszewski last Saturday evening. His 18-year-old son, Van Halen bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, was the best man, while Eddie's brother/drummer/resident reverend, Alex Van Halen, performed the service in the garden of Eddie's estate in Studio City. During the services, the Sonus Quartet (an awesome string quartet) played VH's "When It's Love" (co-written by Sammy Hagar — who wasn't invited to the ceremony). On the flipside, Eddie's ex-wife, actress Valerie Bertinelli, was in attendance. The bride and groom toasted with non-alcoholic French Sparkling Apple Cider and Sparkling Pear Juice honoring Eddie's year and a half of sobriety. After dinner, Ed chose Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful" as the traditional first dance; Janie's choice was Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." A honeymoon in New York, Germany and the Netherlands is planned, and we all wish them the best!

"U2 believe the world must not be allowed to forget Aung San Suu Kyi and every night on the 360 Tour fans are being invited to wear the mask when the band plays 'Walk On,' which was written for her. Put it on, with thousands of others, when Larry [Mullen Jr.] and Edge strike up the opening bars of 'Walk On.'" Suu Kyi was elected in 1990, but the military junta refused to accept the results, placing her under house arrest for the past 19 years. Fans can download the mask via Adobe Acrobat Reader from the U2 website.

A Bit Of The Zep

People who should know are saying that Led Zeppelin bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones has been recording with Foo Fighter frontman/former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl and Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Josh Homme. Knowing both the younger guys — killer musicians each — I must say we should all pray this is true!!

Sorry Bob

Paul McCartney says recent rumors about him collaborating with Bob Dylan are untrue. As Macca says, "I don't rule it out and I admire him, but we're not the kind of people who would ring each other up." Hopping up and down is a different story. There was Sir Paulie hopping onstage during Neil Young's headlining set at London's Hard Rock Calling festival last Saturday to duet on a rendition of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life." The dynamic duo wrapped up Neil's concert with an impromptu vibraphone solo before exiting the stage. Yes, a vibraphone solo.

Over 175,000 people attended Glastonbury, which has been held on the same dairy farm for 39 years.
