P.J.'s Big Week

It's a good week for Pearl Jam. Besides playing the first of four sold-out dates at the Gibson Amphitheatre last night, their new album "Backspacer" debuted at #1 on this week’s Billboard Top 200 — their first #1 LP since 1996’s "No Code!"

In The Red

Yes, Bono's charitable organization (RED) was profitable from it's launch, but no one expected the band's current tour to generate immediate profits. You'll see all sorts of media stories over the next few days hyping that the group's manager, Paul McGuinness, says that their "U2360° Tour" is still in the red. Sure they've sold over $365 million dollars in tickets over the last few months, but so far the tour has cost over $730 million dollars to stage. With their multiple 170-ton stages being moved around by 200 trucks, 250 speakers per stage and nearly 400 employees to keep it all going, the band’s stadium show is more than a fantastic spectacle — it’s the biggest rock tour of all time. And the Irish lads will make money as they continue on the road through 2010.

Macca's Memories/New DVD

Here's your chance to experience Paul McCartney's grand opening of Citi Field, the new home of the New York Mets, earlier this Summer. He'll be releasing the "Good Evening New York City" 2CD/1DVD set on November 17th. Each of the three sold-out nights' 33-song, two-hour-and-40-minute hits-filled set was filmed with 15 high-definition cameras, plus an additional 75 flipcams were distributed to the audience to capture all angles of Macca’s performance. The deluxe edition will feature a bonus DVD of Sir Paulie's entire performance atop the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York for the "Late Show With David Letterman" broadcast on July 15th.

Six Wives/No Waiting

Longtime Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman released his "The Six Wives Of Henry VIII" solo album to much acclaim back in 1973. Besides giving him another excuse to wear a cape on stage, the album also made a few mortgage payments for Rick, selling over 15 million copies worldwide in the past 36 years. If you've been holding out for a live version of the recording, know that starting on October 13th you can personally own a brand new DVD, Blu-Ray or CD of Rick's May 2009 performance of the entire piece in London. Your donning a cape for the viewing party is totally optional.

Working Men

Rush have released many, many live albums as well as several compilations of studio tracks. So it only makes sense that, with the trio on hiatus, that next month they'll release their first ever live performance compilation. "Working Men" will come out on both DVD and CD on November 17th — just a bit early for Christmas giving, but still a rockin' good time.

Ladanyi Passes On

Greg Ladanyi, the GRAMMY-winning producer who worked with Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Fleetwood Mac, Warren Zevon and many others, died Sunday evening at the age of 57. Greg suffered a severe head trauma in a freak onstage accident last Friday in Cyprus. On tour with Anna Vissi, an artist signed to his label, he fell 13 feet in a gap between the stands, fracturing his skull, ribs and chest. I had the great pleasure of working with Greg many times over the years, and his love of life and passion for music will really be missed. A SoCal memorial service is being planned. Rest in peace, music man.

UncUpdate On This Day Graphic

On this day in 1971, Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" hit #1 on the charts.

On this day in 1975, yer Uncle was there when a bomb scare cleared out Milwaukee's Uptown Theatre where Bruce Springsteen was performing with his E Street Band. [They actually finished three songs before the police made everyone leave.] Bruce went back to the Pfister Hotel to wait for the gig's rescheduled midnight commencement. Making use of the bar, the usually conservative Springsteen got — in his own words — "a little loose." The rescheduled show was a wild two-hour performance. But the most lasting impression was the comment of a British writer along for the ride back to the hall when Bruce got out and rode on top of the car: "I have seen the future of rock & roll and he is on my windshield." Rock on!

On this day in 1976, Rod Stewart released the song "Tonight's the Night."

On this day in 1982, John 'Cougar' Mellencamp hit #1 with the song "Jack and Diane."

On this day in 1982, vocalist Peter Gabriel performed with Genesis for the first time since leaving the band in 1975. Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks and their crew helped out with a concert to benefit WOMAD, thus saving Gabriel's ailing world music organization.

On this day in 1985, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band brought their "Born in the U.S.A." tour to a close with a four-hour show at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

On this day in 1987, Bruce Springsteen released his "Tunnel Of Love" album, which seemed to document the collapse of his marriage.

On this day in 1994, drummer Stan Lynch performed with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers for the last time. The gig was part of Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit Concert.

On this day in 1994, John Mellencamp admitted that he had suffered a mild heart attack, which was caused by high cholesterol and a four-packs-a-day cigarette habit. Sharp, John, real sharp.

On this day in 1998, singing cowboy Gene Autry died at the age of 91. His biggest hit was, of course, the original version of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

On this day in 1999, former Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones played his first solo concert ever in Galway, Ireland. No other former Zep members were present.

Farm Aid

Farm Aid co-founders John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Willie Nelson will be hosting the 2009 Farm Aid concert in St. Louis this Sunday. Longtime supporter and board member Dave Matthews will also be among the score of performers. Since its start in 1985, the Farm Aid organization's annual concerts have brought in almost $35 million to fund programs supporting family-run farms and promote the food they grow. The concert will air live on DirecTV and online at http://www.farmaid.org.

Richie Hayward Tribute

We learned in August that renowned Little Feat drummer Richie Hayward suffers from advanced-stage liver cancer. But the longtime session man — who has worked with Bob Seger, Robert Plant and Bob Dylan among others — has no health insurance. So music colleagues are hosting a benefit concert on Sunday at the Canyon Club in Augora Hills. Among the scheduled performers for the "Benefit for Richie Hayward," produced in association with the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, will be Albert Lee, Mick Fleetwood and Shaun Murphy. A great evening of great music for a great cause!

The Hall's DVD

How better to celebrate the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's 25th anniversary than with a comprehensive DVD set of performances compiled from a quarter century of induction celebrations. The eight DVD "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Live" collection features 125 performances from Springsteen, Jagger, REM, Vedder and many more. We can all get our personal copies on October 20th at TimeLife.com.

Fogerty TV

John Fogerty will be featured on the November 7th edition of PBS' "Live By Request." That broadcast of the Emmy-award winning music series that allows viewers to create the set list will be a big part of this Fall's PBS' fundraising drive. The former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman is in good company: others who have been featured on "Live by Request" include David Bowie, Elton John and Tony Bennett.

Stringing The Doors

Two co-founders of The Doors, classically-trained pianist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger, have collaborated with The Phoenix Symphony to rework The Doors' catalog. Manzarek and Krieger's band featuring former Fuel singer Brett Scallions will perform with a 45-piece orchestra led by conductor Brent Havens for the world premiere of "The Music of the Doors" this Thursday in Phoenix. You have to wonder how the classical crowd will react to the "mother" bit in "The End."

New Bruce/Old Place

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band are in the middle of their five night residency at New Jersey's Giants Stadium — the final performances ever at the venue, which is being demolished next year. To mark the occasion, The Boss has been performing a brand new song called "Wrecking Ball," which includes lyrics like "Bring on your wrecking ball/Come on, take your best shot/Let me see what you got/Bring on your wrecking ball." Besides that unreleased tune and 20 or so songs from the rock & roll canon, each night's three-and-a-half hour show includes the performance of an entire album. Bruce and the band next play Giants Stadium on Thursday.

High Def Journey

Journey have just released a two-disc live DVD of their March 2009 Manila concert. The band's biggest performance in lead singer Arnel Pineda's home country of the Philippines was shot on 4K high-definition cameras with a resolution greater than that of 35mm film. Kinda scary sounding, wouldn't you say?

New/Old Bowie

David Bowie will release a re-mastered double CD album of his 2003-2004 tour. "A Reality Tour" will have a 33-song track list, including tunes from virtually every phase of the singer's life, dating back to the title song of his 1971 album, "The Man Who Sold The World." The package will be available January 26th.

Grandma Rocks

Here's another reason we love Metallica! When the heavy rockin' Hall Of Famers hit Tampa over the weekend, they made sure that 85-year-old Margaret Priebe was invited backstage. Each member of the group spent some time with her, then during the sold-out concert singer James Hetfield dedicated the song “Nothing Else Matters” to her! Margaret says that she became a big fan of Metallica's symphonic "S&M" album, and has loved their music ever since. She even turned to the music while dealing with a cancer battle last year and is now cancer-free. She said that she was nervous to meet the band, but it sure was a thrill! Check out pictures of the backstage Meet & Greet at Metallica.com.

If you have a cool half-million in your pocket, we've got a guitar for you! After eight years of legal wrangling over its ownership, a 1967 Fender Stratocaster guitar once played by Jimi Hendrix has been declared the property of Greg Dorsett of San Diego and David Brewis of England. You have to wonder if the expected $500,000 price tag will cover their legal expenses.

Heavy Rockin' Night In The Valley

Pearl Jam's Monday night Gibson Amphitheatre concert featured a surprise appearance by former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell. His performance with P.J. of the song "Hunger Strike" unified all the principal members of Temple Of The Dog — the one-off band that became Pearl Jam — for the first time in six years. But wait, there's more! Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Shephard were at the show with Cornell to check out their former drummer Matt Cameron, who has been working with Pearl Jam for years. That gathering marked the first time the full Soundgarden band has been seen publicly together in over a decade. And if a potential Soundgarden reunion weren't enough, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready gave Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell his guitar to shred the solo in the epic "Alive!" What a night in the Valley!

Backbeat To The Stage

The 1994 movie "Backbeat," which semi-documented the early days of The Beatles, is headed for the stage next year. The film's writer/director, Iain Softley, has co-written the stage adaptation with Stephen Jeffreys. But considering that the movie focused on original Beatles bassist Stuart Sutcliffe (who died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1962), you have to wonder if there'll be a happy ending every night on stage. We'll just have to wait to find out until the February premiere in Scotland.
