Dio's Down

Midway through a European tour with his solo band late last week, legendary singer Ronnie James Dio was diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. The tour was immediately canceled and Ronnie returned to the States to begin treatment at the famed Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. A veteran of Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Heaven & Hell, as well as his own band, Dio, Ronnie is a man of fierce determination. He should be doing fine soon.

Super/Who

Did you remember to act surprised when, during Thursday's Cowboys/Raiders game, the NFL announced that The Who will rock the Bridgestone Super Bowl 44 Halftime Show? Here's hoping that Roger Daltrey's voice and Pete Townshend's windmill guitar are both spot on as the event airs in 230 countries and territories. Last year, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's halftime jam garnered more than 151 million viewers in the U.S. alone! February 7th is the day that the Super Who Super Bowl 44 will air from Miami's Dolphins Stadium on CBS.

Beck/Clapton

Their mini-tour of Japan was a major success — commercially and artistically — and an historic London show is in the works, so why wouldn't former Yardbirds Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton come to America? The guitar gods first three North American concert dates together will include at least one Madison Square Garden gig (February 18th for sure) and well as Toronto and Montreal shows. Where do you think they'll play in the Southland?

On To South America

Currently touring Japan, Korea and Taiwan, Guns N' Roses have added a month in South America to their schedule. Following a string of Canadian dates in January, Axl Rose will roll his band into South America on March 10th.

HullabaLOU For You

Churchill Downs, famed home of the Kentucky Derby, will welcome the first ever HullabaLOU festival on July 23rd, 24th and 25th. The event, produced by the New Orleans Jazz Fest people, will encompass five stages of live music. So far the line-up includes Bon Jovi, the Steve Miller Band, the Doobie Brothers, Steppenwolf (who supposedly retired two years ago) and the Dave Matthews Band.

The Biggest Box Set

Atlantic Records has just released the "Atlantic Records Time Capsule," a huge, limited-edition, nine-CD collection in a custom metallic box. The 165 tracks from 141 artists — like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Cream, Bad Company and Ray Charles — span the label’s entire history from its inception in 1947 to present day. The package also includes a DVD documentary, vinyl singles, an elegant 140-page book with rare photos from the label’s archive and much more. By the way, have I mentioned that my birthday's next week? And I really like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Cream, Bad Company and Ray Charles!

Slash On Down The Road

Looks like Slash's special appearance at next week's Mark & Brian Christmas Show won't be enough to satisfy his primal need to hit the road. As soon as his new album, "Slash & Friends," is released next year, the legendary guitarist will be touring the States. Though none of his collaborators — Flea of the Chili Peppers, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Ronnie Wood of The Stones, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, among others — will be touring with him, you know Slash's show will kick some butt!

DLR's Art Show

David Lee Roth is many things: a well known Rock & Roll singer, a reputed EMT and, we're just finding out, an artist! The full-time Diamond Dave/occasional Van Halen frontman has uploaded a whole bunch of his artwork at DavidLeeRoth.com. The ever clever Dave calls his pieces “authentic originals and incompetent imitations,” and who are we to question the artist?

Lovable, heavy metal clown Ozzy Osbourne is 61.
Vocalist Mickey Thomas of the Jefferson Starship is 60.
Guitarist/singer Don Barnes of 38 Special is 57.

UncUpdate On This Day Graphic

On this day in 1965, Keith Richards' guitar accidentally touched his microphone while The Rolling Stones performed "The Last Time" in Sacramento. The resulting electric shock knocked Keef unconscious for seven minutes. Of course, the show went on and he never knew the difference.

On this day in 1965, The Beatles began their last U.K. tour in Glasgow, Scotland, supported by The Moody Blues. The Fab Four were promoting the release of the single "We Can Work It Out" backed with "Day Tripper." Wow!

On this day in 1968, NBC-TV aired the famed Elvis Presley comeback special. After years of making horrible movies, Presley proved he could still rock, improvising a set with his old rhythm section in a boxing ring, looking great in black leather and bringing the house down with his performance. Sadly, Las Vegas purgatory was right around the bend.

On this day in 1971, a fire burned down the Montreux Casino in Switzerland during a Frank Zappa concert. Deep Purple witnessed the conflagration and immediately wrote "Smoke on the Water" about the catastrophe. Rock on!

On this day in 1976, a giant inflatable pig was spotted floating over London's Battersea Power Station. It was only a prop being used for the album cover of Pink Floyd's "Animals" album. However, the balloon broke free of its moorings and drifted away, prompting the Civil Aviation Authority to issue a warning to pilots flying over London. No one really knows what happened to the big pig, but crop circles began showing up soon afterward!

On this day in 1976, the Sex Pistols released "Anarchy in the U.K." — perhaps another reason for the existence of crop circles.

On this day in 1979, a stampede of fans trying to get into a Who concert in Cincinnati left 11 people crushed to death. Regrettably, the band wasn't told of the incident until after the show. Although newsman Walter Cronkite blamed the incident on "a drug-crazed mob of kids," the venue's general (no reserved) seating policy was later identified as the cause of the problem.

Good God It's GRAMMY Time

We're all praying that the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards show will be a million times better than last night's TV presentation of the nominations. None the less, among last night's highlights were Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Prince, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young all nominated for the Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.

The Best Rock Song GRAMMY will definitely go to Pearl Jam's "The Fixer," U2's "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight," Green Day's "21 Guns," the Kings Of Leon's "Use Somebody" or Bruce Springsteen's "Working On A Dream."

There's a good chance that the Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals will go to Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood for their latest version of "Can't Find My Way Home" or U2 for "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight."

AC/DC, Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood, Green Day, Dave Matthew Band and U2 are all up for the Best Rock Album GRAMMY.

AC/DC, Alice In Chains and Metallica were among those nominated for the Best Hard Rock Performance.

Jeff Beck's electrifying version of "A Day In The Life" is competing with Steve Vai's "Now We Run" and the Brian Setzer Orchestra's "Mr. Surfer Goes Jazzin'" for the Best Rock Instrumental Performance award.

And finally, Bon Jovi's "We Weren't Born to Follow" was nominated for the Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals.

REO's Holiday Gigs

Can't say REO Speedwagon isn't working their first Holiday album! The boys will be featured on ABC's "Holiday Of Stars" this Sunday evening, then a rebroadcast of their performance on NBC's Holiday Celebration On Ice will air on the Hallmark Channel Monday. But the undeniable biggest feather in their promotional cap is the fact that they'll have two songs in this year's Uncle Joe's Rockin' Christmas Show!

BTO/Not BTO

After two or three decades apart, Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s Randy Bachman and Fred Turner have reunited to work on Randy’s next album, "Rock N Roll Is The Only Way Out." But in a weird twist of litigation, Randy and Fred will have to use someone else's name when they tour behind the new album next year. Original BTO drummer Rob Bachman and guitarist Blair Thornton have successfully sued to prevent Bachman and Turner from promoting themselves as anything similar to Bachman-Turner Overdrive. That's right: the two guys who formed and named the original band, and then hired Robby and Blair to play with them, can't use their own names. Perhaps they should call themselves Billable Hours.

Xmas For The Cure

Here's one to keep your eye out for: the "Hope For The Holidays — Rockin' Christmas For A Cure" charity CD, which includes 27 tracks of different bands' versions of yuletide classics. Jon Anderson of Yes, David Coverdale of Whitesnake, Collective Soul and Creedence Clearwater Revisited are among the featured artists. Proceeds from the disc will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

On this day in 1980, two months after the death of drummer John Bonham, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin released a statement announcing their intent to break up. It read in part, "We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were."

A Bad Woodie

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of assaulting his 20-year-old Russian waitress girlfriend. Ronnie’s volatile relationship with Ekaterina Ivanova (who is 42 years his junior) resulted in a very expensive divorce from his wife of 24 years. If that weren't enough for the Brit tabloids, the Capricorn Club in Soho — where Woodie met the charming Miss Ivanova last year — was closed after a vice squad raid last week. Authorities claim the club was a $2 million-a-year underground brothel where clients had sex in cubicles and drugs including cocaine were available. The shock! The horror! And the beat goes on...

KISS Over The Pond

Betcha Europe is pretty in the late Spring — a perfect time for KISS' first European arena tour in 11 years! Sonic Boom Over Europe: From The Beginning To The Boom will kick off on May 7th in Dublin and run through Belgium's Graspop festival on June 27th.

Live Now Dead

Did anybody even know the band Live was on hiatus? Not around here — until guitarist Chad Taylor announced this week that "...it became clear that things had run their course." Seems that after the group took a break in 2005, someone discovered a contract that tied the band's legal entity into just singer Ed Kowalczyk and no one else. Having never seen the Tom Hanks movie "That Thing You Do," guitarist Taylor didn't realize that's how management and/or record companies break up bands. Well, now Chad finally knows... and Live are history.

Eric Woolfson R.I.P.

Following a long battle with cancer, Eric Woolfson, co-founder of the Alan Parsons Project, died at the age of 64 on Tuesday. In addition to a series of albums with his collaborator, record producer Alan Parsons, Eric also wrote songs for artists such as Marianne Faithfull, Marmalade and The Tremeloes.

Big Boss Honors

"I'm the president, but he's The Boss." That's how President Barack Obama greeted Bruce Springsteen Sunday night at a White House reception before the iconic rocker was lauded with Kennedy Center Honors along with Robert De Niro, comic genius Mel Brooks, jazz legend Dave Brubeck and opera singer Grace Bumbry. During the ceremony, John Mellencamp sang "Born in the U.S.A.," Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland did "Glory Days," Melissa Etheridge rocked "Born To Run" to a standing ovation and Sting performed "The Rising" with help from a choir. When Ben Stiller came out to honor De Niro, he got distracted, yelling: "Oh my God, it's Bruce Springsteen! Bruuuuce!" "And then it's Nobel Peace guy," he said of the president. CBS will air highlights of the ceremony on December 29th.

All You Need Is Starbucks

Drawing inspiration from The Beatles, Starbucks hosted a live worldwide performance of "All You Need Is Love" at 5:30am PST today (Monday) as part of its "Love Project." The global concert was streamed (not steamed) live online via Facebook. In connection with "The Love Project," Starbucks has released "The Love CD" — a four-track EP featuring U2, the Dave Matthews Band, Playing For Change and John Legend. The Starbucks event was a thank you to customers who helped the company contribute to the Global Fund through its partnership with RED, a partnership that bought over seven million days of medicine to help people living with HIV in Africa. Woodie Versus P.O.ed Granny

Forget the drugs, drink and nonstop partying on the highway to hell, 62-year-old Ronnie Wood may get snuffed at the hands of a granny. The 76-year-old Russian grandmother of Ekaterina Ivanova, Ronnie's 20-year-old girlfriend, says she will take revenge on the occasional Rolling Stones guitarist if he hurts her granddaughter in any way. Considering that Woodie was arrested last week on allegations that he choked the former barmaid and drug her down the street in a headlock, he may need a couple of burly bodyguards by his side until The Stones tour next year!

Satch Joins Hendrix Tour

Each year, rockers get together and hit the road on a trek that pays tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Next year's month-long edition of the all star Experience Hendrix tour will feature Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford and Chickenfoot guitar god Joe Satriani. Others making the trip will include Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Doyle Bramhall II and bassist Billy Cox (who actually worked with Jimi). Starting on March 5th at our Gibson Amphitheater, the whole crew will individually and collectively perform music written by and associated with Hendrix. Rock & Roll!

AC/DC Go Gaucho

On the heels of the 2010 GRAMMY Awards Best Rock Album nomination for their "Black Ice" album, AC/DC filmed three sold-out shows in Buenos Aires last weekend for a future DVD release. On top of that, if rocking 65,000 fans each night weren't enough (and Lord knows those Argentine women can be very distracting), the boys shot footage at the stadium on another night without an audience. We can only assume that Angus Young was fully prepared for his close-ups!

Eric Gets Busy

Having retired from touring a few years back, Eric Clapton is now making up for lost time. In addition to three (so far) North American concerts with fellow guitar god/Yardbirds alumni Jeff Beck, E.C. will start his own solo U.S. tour in February with Steve Gadd on drums, Willie Weeks on bass and both Chris Stainton and Walt Richmond on keyboards with Michelle John and Sharon White as backing vocalists. But wait — there's more! Frontman/rock god Roger Daltrey — fresh from performing with The Who in front of hundreds of millions as this year's Super Bowl halftime performers — will open all of Eric's U.S. dates! And since Clapton's gigs with Beck are actually scheduled during the opening dates of Eric's solo tour, maybe Daltrey and Beck will join Slowhand's touring band! After that potentially historic jaunt, Eric will rejoin his Blind Faith bandmate Steve Winwood for a short Springtime tour of Europe. Wonder if E.C. will take a break after June 1st?

Decade's Biggest Album

Would you have guessed that the top selling album of the first decade of the new millennium was The Beatles' "1" compilation? The collection of 27 #1 hits — from 1962's "Love Me Do" to 1970's "The Long and Winding Road" — has sold 11.5 million copies since it's November 2000 release. And the biggest band of the 2000s, which actually broke up in 1970, capped off the decade with the extremely successful release of "The Beatles: Rock Band" on the same day their digitally-remastered original recordings were issued. Right so!
