Uncle Joe Benson at work & play at the California Speedway NASCAR races - September 2004.
Since its opening in 1997, Joe Benson has been the Voice of the California Speedway. In that role, he handles the master of ceremonies duties for race day, as well as play-by-play announcing.
September 3 - 5, 2004: Well, a little heat never hurt anyone... The Inaugural NASCAR Nextel Cup Series "Finish Under the Lights" Pop Secret 500 at the California Speedway saw 100+ degree temps in the day and 100,000+ cameras flashing as the Musco Lights were turned on for the historic first night race at the super speedway. J.B. and the legendary Jim Mueller announced the Busch and Cup qualifying sessions on Friday, the NASCAR Busch Series Target House 300 on Saturday and the NASCAR Nextel Cup Pop Secret 500 on Sunday. If J.B. wasn't busy enough with those duties, there he was hanging with Olympians Scott Hamilton, Amanda Beard, Kim Rhode and Leah O'Brien-Amico, as well as bouncing on stage with Saturday's musical headliners, Camp Freddy. By Sunday night, that boy was just as excited as race winner Elliott Sadler!
