March 22-24, 2002: Uncle Joe announced the first ever IRL race, the Yamaha Indy 400 at the California Speedway in Fontana. Indy Racing League points leader Sam Hornish Jr. edged Jaques Lazier by .0281 of a second — the second-closest finish in IRL history —- to win the Yamaha Indy 400. The 39 lead changes set a new league record, as did the average race speed of 179.345 mph. Veteran drivers Jimmy Vasser, Gil De Ferran and Al Unser JR. were all on hand. Zoom!
