Uncle Joe Benson at work & play at the NASCAR races at California Speedway - 4/2001. Since it's opening in 1997, Joe Benson has been the voice of the California Speedway. In that role, he handles the master of ceremonies duties for race day, as well as doing play-by-play announcing with his old friend Shawn Parr. April 27-29, 2001: Uncle Joe closed out the monster racing month of April at California Speedway in Fontana. Racing fans got a chance to hear Joe provide "on-track" announcing and color commentary during the NASCAR Winston West Series Pontiac WideTrack Grand Prix 200, the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division Auto Club 300 and the NASCAR Winston Cup NAPA Auto Parts 500. Things started early Thursday evening with NASCAR After Dark, which included music from the ARROW 93 Classic Rockers and the Racing Midway open for business. The night ended with an auction to wave the green flag for one of the races! Uncle Joe's 300ZX race car was on display all weekend at the ARROW 93 booth. Saturday evening J.B. brought on the musical performance of Blue Oyster Cult, but not before the crowd started chanting Uncle Joe, Uncle Joe! With attendance Sunday this year in excess of 130,000, the NASCAR Winston Cup NAPA Auto Parts 500 was clearly the largest sporting event in western United States.
